When Is Now?

When Google designed GMail, they added for the timestamp of each message a bit of text saying "6 hours ago", rather than "10:39am". The reasoning was that people can identify much easier for when 6 hours ago was, rather than when 10:39am was.

That caught me off guard, but since then I've realized much more clearly that I really don't know what day or time it is, and certainly identify with relative time better than absolute. FWIW.
