Ehren Starks, The Depths of a Year (Magnatune.com, Jazz)

This album surprised me. I have an album of classical piano/cello music, (containing 20th century compositions), so I had a little notion of what the two instruments sounded like together, and the first three tracks lit that expectation. Not something I mind, but not my favorite sound, either. Then it seemed like the album took a different tack, and really surprised me. If the Drop Trio release is my first purchase, this is likely my second. Having slept on it, it's still a certainty that I'll give it another listen, but it's little wonder that it's at the top of the Magnatune charts. Quite good.
